What the two numbers mean

In simple meter, the top number tells students how many beats are in each measure and the bottom number shows which note gets the beat. In 3/4 there are three beats per measure and the quarter note (crotchet) gets the beat; in 2/2 the half note (minim) gets the beat.

Compound meters such as 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8 group eighth notes in threes, so the beat is a dotted quarter. Divide the top number by three to find the beats per measure: 6/8 has two beats, 9/8 has three, and 12/8 has four.

Move from simple to compound and asymmetric meters

Start in 4/4 and 2/4 while students learn to count quarter and eighth notes, then add 3/4 so they hear the difference between duple and triple groupings. Introduce 6/8 once dotted quarter notes are familiar, and save 9/8 and 12/8 for when the compound pulse is secure.

Asymmetric meters such as 5/4, 5/8, and 7/8 combine groups of two and three. Add them for advanced students, or put several meters on one page so students must check each time signature before counting.

Add, write, or count in each meter

Choose an activity in the rhythm generator. Add the time signature prints each four-bar line without its time signature, so students work out the meter from the beats in each bar. Write a rhythm gives students empty bars in a chosen meter, and the answer key shows one possible answer. Count prints the rhythm for students to write the counting under each beat.

Choose the note values, rests, and dotted notes your class knows, then generate a fresh page for the next lesson.

Frequently asked questions

What do the numbers in a time signature mean?

In simple meter, the top number is the number of beats in each measure and the bottom number is the note value that gets one beat. A 4 on the bottom means the quarter note gets the beat.

What is the difference between simple and compound meter?

In simple meter, each beat divides into two equal parts. In compound meter, such as 6/8, each beat is a dotted quarter that divides into three eighth notes.

Which time signatures can I choose?

The rhythm generator supports 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, and 12/8. You can also place more than one meter on a page.

Can students add the time signature or write their own rhythms?

Yes. Choose Add time signature to print each line without its time signature, or Write a rhythm to give students empty bars in a chosen meter. Every page includes a matching answer key.
