Build every scale from its step pattern
A major scale follows the pattern whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half, where a half step is a semitone and a whole step is a tone. Each letter name appears once, so students choose sharps or flats to fit the pattern rather than mixing spellings such as A♯ and B♭ in the same scale.
The natural minor scale follows whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole. Harmonic minor raises the seventh degree, and melodic minor raises the sixth and seventh degrees as it ascends.
Write, identify, or mix both tasks
Writing pages give students a tonic and scale type to complete on the staff. Identification pages show a finished scale, on the staff or a piano keyboard, for students to name. Mixed pages combine both for review.
Start with major scales, then add the three forms of minor. Modes, pentatonic, blues, and jazz scales are available for older students and improvisation classes.
Connect scales to key signatures
A major scale uses exactly the sharps or flats in its key signature, so writing scales and naming key signatures reinforce each other. After students write a scale, ask them to name the signature it uses.
