For students
What to notice
- The A section is a chain of falling 5ths: Cmaj7, then Cm7–F7, Fmaj7, Fm7–B♭7.
- The B section lifts everything a minor 3rd to E♭ and D♭, a bright shift away from C major.
- Dm7♭5–G7 in the B section is a minor ii–V that points back toward C.
Practice plan
Three steps to improvising
- Play the guide tones through the A section and follow the falling 5ths.
- In the B section, name the new key before you improvise.
- Use C major for the A section, then change scales with every chord in the B section.
For teachers
Using this chart in class
- Project the chart with Play along running and loop one section while students find the guide tones.
- Choose Practice → Name the numerals for a whole-class quiz: students vote, then reveal the explanation.
- Mixed ensemble? Print the worksheet once per transposition: B♭, E♭, F and bass clef parts all line up bar for bar.
- Share a link: the key, instrument and view you choose are saved in the address bar.
