For students

What to notice

  • The A section moves through E7–A7–Dm7, a chain of dominants that each fall a 5th.
  • E7 is V7/vi, A7 is V7/ii, and D7 in the second A is V7/V: three secondary dominants in one tune.
  • The last A turns the tonic into Fm7–B♭7, a backdoor route home to C.

Practice plan

Three steps to improvising

  1. Play the guide tones and follow the chain of 5ths through the first eight bars.
  2. Name each secondary dominant and the chord it points to.
  3. Improvise with C major, then use each dominant chord scale where it appears.

For teachers

Using this chart in class

  • Project the chart with Play along running and loop one section while students find the guide tones.
  • Choose Practice → Name the numerals for a whole-class quiz: students vote, then reveal the explanation.
  • Mixed ensemble? Print the worksheet once per transposition: B♭, E♭, F and bass clef parts all line up bar for bar.
  • Share a link: the key, instrument and view you choose are saved in the address bar.

Chord changes are common performance versions written out by Music Theory Lessons. No melodies or lyrics are reproduced. Names of songs and composers are used only to identify each tune.
